Things to do when you visit us in Cumbria

Castle Court is set high up on the fells between two villages and is an ideal base for exploring the surrounding areas. Of course the lure of walking on the fells and round the lakes is strong for most visitors but there are plenty of other things to keep you occupied.

The Lake District

We are only 20 minutes from the most beautiful lake - Ullswater.  Here you can take a leisurely trip across the lake on the steamers, and walk back round if you would like to.  The villages of Pooley Bridge and Glennridding offer craft shops and cafes.

An impressive drive through Kendal will take you to Lake Windermere.

Theatres and Cinemas

The Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal always has interesting shows and films with two bars and a restaurant.

The Theatre by the Lake at Keswick.

The Old Laundry Theatre in Windermere.

Zeffirelli's in Ambleside has a cinema, a pizza restaurant and live music.

Penrith is a market town 12 miles north of Castle Court. It is a small town and retains a good selection of individual shops not found in the normal high street.  Visit the museum and the Castle.

Kendal

Kendal is said to have built its wealth on the wool trade in the 1800s.  Situated 15 miles south of Castle Court it is a quaint little town full of cobbled streets and alleyways.  It offers a good range of high street and individual shops. There are lots of places to eat and drink and several good museums to visit.

Appleby

The home of the famous Appleby Horse Fair that takes place every June.  This historic town is built on the River Eden and has a small number good traditional shops and a good selection of tearooms and cafes

Places to eat

Food is BIG in Cumbria and we pride ourselves on the fantastic quality of local produce.

The village of Shap is 1.5 miles from Castle Court.  There is a good fish and chip shop open until 8pm.  The Cream17 cafe is worth a visit and if you want a great meal try The Greyhound famous for its very good local food and hefty portions! There are three other pubs serving good food and now  Mango - a restaurant (& guest house) in Shap, with a very unlikely and fabulously tasty menu!

There are more Michelin Star restaurants in Cumbria then anywhere else in the UK outside London, and certainly some of the best chefs around creating wonderful dishes from our great local Cumbrian produce.   We can recommend many good restaurants, cafe, pubs and farm shops in the county.

Markets

The is a very large market on the outskirts of Penrith town every Saturday with a car boot sale on the same site every Sunday.

Farmers Markets

The famous Orton Farmers Market is on the second Saturday of the month.  Orton is one mile from the M6 at J38

Visit the most picturesque Farmers Market in Pooley Bridge on the edge of Lake Ullswater held on the last Sunday of the month March - September
