Just do it!  Motivational speaker Jo Hampson on stage at the Rheged

POSITIVE thinking and empowerment were the themes of a mental health conference attended by more than 200 Cumbrians.

The event, at Rheged near Penrith, was aimed at service users, carers and staff from across the county.

The full-day conference was hosted by the Cumbria Partnership, formerly the Mental Health and Learning Disabilities Trust.

As part of that new ethos, members were keen to hold an action-packed day which was much more than a meeting. Although the formal annual general meeting was held in the morning, the rest of the day was filled with fun activities and workshops.

Organiser Sue Cowperthwaite, a carer from Cockermouth, said the Recipe For Life conference was all about making positive choices.

Guests included motivational speaker Jo Hampson, a theatre company, a life coach and the popular West House drumming band Our Voice. Participants were able to get involved in banner making, creative writing, tai-chi and massage sessions. There were also information stalls about services available in Cumbria.

Mrs Cowperthwaite, whose daughter has learning disabilities, said it was a really positive event.

“I was involved last year but much more so this year and I thoroughly enjoyed it. There was so much going on,” she said.

Mrs Jones, who also cares for her husband, said it was beneficial to exchange ideas and discuss problems. She also enjoyed listening to the motivational speaker. “She was very good. She got us to think about something we wanted to achieve in the future and then asked us what action needed to be taken now to help it happen,” she said. “I’ve taken that on board and set myself some goals.”

Cockermouth service user Kevin Twigg added: “This was the first time I’d been and it was unbelievable. There was so much going on, I’ve never seen anything like it.

“Full credit goes to the organisers for doing such a good job.”
